Zimbabwe joined the SWA partnership in 2013 and is currently a member of the SWA Steering Committee representing government constituency for East and Southern Africa. WASH services constitute basic rights that the government of Zimbabwe and her cooperating partners are obligated to provide. Zimbabwe’s consistent participation in the SWA processes over the years has resulted in enhanced understanding of the SWA Framework at country level as evidenced by its active participation in all relevant SWA engagements, discussions and forums. Zimbabwe has since participated in the Sector Ministers Meetings (SMM) and Finance Ministers Meetings (FMM) in the past since 2016. The country’s contribution to the deliberations, discussions and sector positions agreed to by member states shows high-level commitment and political will. Zimbabwe has also been participating in the annual compilation of the UN-Water Global Analysis and Assessment of Sanitation and Drinking-Water (GLAAS) report, and it completed the WASH SDGs Costing Tool distributed by SWA Secretariat as part of the preparation process leading to the 2017 High Level Meeting. Currently, Zimbabwe with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) is in the process of establishing a sector financial tracking system (TrackFin) as part of the agreed post FMM activities to strengthen its mutual accountability mechanism (MAM). The government, with support from UNICEF, SDC and AMCOW has since developed a gender-sensitive National Sanitation and Hygiene Policy which is now awaiting cabinet approval. The policy aims to create an open defaecation free Zimbabwe by 2030 in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
