Sri Lanka joined SWA in 2010. The Ministry of City Planning and Water Supply which looks after water and sanitation is the nodal agency for SWA engagement. The Select Committee of the Parliament of Sri Lanka on SDGs has been mandated to make recommendations to ensure that the UN 2030 Agenda for SDGs is achieved in Sri Lanka. Water and Sanitation sector led by the Ministry of City Planning and Water Supply has adopted National Drinking Water Supply Policy in 2010 and National Sanitation Policy in 2017. The Ministry is in the process of reviewing the Drinking Water Supply Policy to reflect commitment to achieve SDG 6 target 6.1 and 6.2.
Commitments by partners
Reorganise the FANSA Sri Lanka and bring at least 20 organisations to the platform by 2020 to push SDG commitments.
Advocate Government of Sri Lanka to meet the sanitation targets SDG 6 targets 6.1 and 6.2 by 2025 and continue "Leave no one behind campaign" to meet 50% of this target by 2022.
Advocate and assist the Ministry responsible for water supply and sanitation to reconvene the WATSAN committee by December 2019.
