Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea joined SWA in late 2019. The Department of National Planning and Monitoring (DNPM) is responsible for managing the implementation of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene programmes along with the allocation of resources through the budget. Given its importance, the government has prioritized Water, Sanitation and Hygiene as a sector of its own. The government formulated the first ever WASH policy (2015-2030) and subsequently established the WASH Programme Management Unit within DNPM in 2016. The policy aims to improve access to water and sanitation services and to change hygiene behaviors particularly for underserved rural areas where the vast majority of the population live
