Mali joined SWA in 2010. The government of Mali, through the Water and Sanitation directorates, organizes annual sector meetings of all stakeholders to ensure sector coordination and to review progress towards the SDGs and the elimination of inequalities, and uses the SWA Framework to guide discussions. The main findings and recommendations, are set out in a roadmap for the implementation by the government and partners. The SWA team in Mali includes representatives of all five constituencies.
Commitments by the government
Advance the end of open defecation in Mali by 4% by 2026.
Advocate for climate change funds to contribute to the achievement of SDG6 in Mali.
Approve legislation establishing the regulation of the public service of drinking water in rural areas.
Approve legislation for the creation of water management agencies by sub-basin and the financial contribution for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).
Continue the dialogue on WASH sector financing by organizing a donor roundtable for the mobilization of necessary financing for the implementation of national water and sanitation programmes and to integrate hygiene and nutrition financing needs into programmes by the end of 2023.
Ensure access to drinking water for 90% of schools and public health centres.
Make the new sanitation data collection system functional for effective information management in planning and financing sub-sectors.
Increase the national rate of access to basic drinking water services, by 2% per year, from 70.9% in 2021, to 85% by 2026.
Accelerate the rate of access to drinking water for the population by 2% (or 800,000 people) per year, reaching an access rate of 73% in 2020.
Adopt by decree the new national water and sanitation policy documents – along with their related implementation programmes – by the end of 2022.
By 2022, develop a new national strategy for the development of drinking water supply, taking into account the concerns of the poorest and most vulnerable populations.
By 2022, develop new National Sanitation Strategy.
Facilitate a dialogue on sector financing as part of the 2020 Consultation Framework.
Commitments by partners
Align the interventions of the technical and financial partners with the Government's priorities, on the basis of a roadmap resulting from the consultation framework of the sector's actors from the 2019 edition.
Contribute to the reduction of disparities in access to drinking water through investments in rural areas.
Strengthen the Public-Private Partnership for the management of the public service delegation.
Annually request updates from the Government on the status of implementation of the commitments made within the framework of SDG 6
Advocate for the government to create a WASH sub-priority in the Strategic Framework for Economic Recovery and Sustainable Development (CREDD) for 2019-2023.
Advocate to ensure that access to water, sanitation and hygiene is a constitutional right.
