The WASH Alliance International contributes to a shift from a hardware-construction approach towards a sustainable WASH sector development approach. In the countries in which the Alliance is active, it works on changing mindsets and creating systems for sustainable and affordable WASH services that create structural change and can accelerate. This is the only way to adapt to fast population growth and urbanisation.

These tools for WASH sector development are aimed at sustaining WASH after the Alliance’s programmes stop, and accelerating it to be able to meet the needs of a growing population. They include:

  • Accelerating Manual: a 116 page manual that outlines the Acceleration method – its 7 principles, mechanisms, conditions and indicators. It describes how to design and finance a programme that can accelerate and provides case examples.
  • Diamond approach
  • Acceleration Approach- Micro Service Provision
  • How to accelerate… by using Social Accountability tools
  • How to accelerate… with Urban Total Sanitation and Solid Waste Management
  • Calculation game
