MDMinisterial Dialogue during SWA's 2017 Sector Ministers' Meeting

SWA's session at the University of North Carolina's Water and Health Conference 2017 will center on what the partnership collectively learned for its systematic and regular process of engaging key political leaders. SWA held regular, global, High-level Meetings (HLMs) involving ministers of finance (2010, 2012, 2014 and 2017) and ministers responsible for sanitation, water and hygiene (2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2017).

Recent processes to revise the SWA Accountability Framework and insights from a number of country case studies being undertaken by SWA partners will contribute to the discussions.

Objectives of the session

  • Understanding the knowledge gaps, including what we need to know to fully harness political influence for consistent action to remove the bottlenecks impeding progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal targets for drinking water and sanitation
  • Examine the key inputs those advocating for progress can provide to decision-makers, including the kind of evidence they need and find most useful.
  • Discuss the trade-offs decision-makers face, best practices in ensuring development effectiveness, as well as factors that sustain a timely, coherent and strategic dialogue among sector actors.
  • Discuss the challenge posed by constant changes at ministerial level and how to sustain a strategic discussion despite the frequent changes.
